BJBFS promotes  beauty of Ikebana

For some years now, the BJBFS has actively promoted the appreciation of Ikebana, the Japanese art of flower arrangement through competition at the BIGS. In Japan, flower arrangements are used as decorations on a level with paintings and other art objects. This highly stylised art form promotes the belief that nature and humanity are brought together in the floral arrangement. Ikebana is creative expression within certain rules of construction. Its materials are living branches, leaves, grasses, and blossoms. Its heart is the beauty resulting from colour combinations, natural shapes, graceful lines, and the meaning latent in the total form of the arrangement. Ikebana is an art, in the same sense that painting and sculpture are arts. It has a recorded history; it is backed up by articulate theories; and it is concerned with creativity. To learn Ikebana or know more, contact the Bahrain Garden Club.

AROUND THE WORLD IN A CUPPA TEA!

The Bahrain Garden Club recently hosted an event about Tea-Drinking Customs from Around the World. It was an exploration of the many legends, the brewing and serving traditions associated with tea. Everybody has heard of the delicacy and the meditative purity of the Japanese Tea Ceremony of course. In Japan, tea is an important part of the food culture.

According to Japanese legend, the Indian Prince Dharma left his homeland for China, to preach Buddhism. He vowed not to sleep during his nine year mission. Towards the end of his mission, however, the exhausted Bodi Dharma fell asleep. Upon awakening, he was so disgusted with himself, he tore off his eyelids, to ensure that they would never inadvertently close again. The place where he threw them on the ground produced enchanted (tea) shrubs with leaves having the power to keep eyelids open.

Even though, the diversity of tea in Japan is quite big, when someone mention the word “Tea” without specifying the type, the reference is to Green Tea. The ceremony of tea is known here as “Matcha,” which consists of serving green tea to a small group of people in one of those popular teahouses.

For those who want to live the real tea experience take a flight to Tokyo and embrace the chance to visit one of the popular tearooms.

At the “Tea Around The World” get-together, guests were treated to a culturally rich display of tea-making and tea trends in countries as diverse as Morocco, Bahrain, Sri Lanka, Turkey, China, Russia and even a proper British cuppa! There was a demonstration of the Japanese Tea which was showcased by Mr. Amer Zeitoun, Managing Partner of MAKI and Friend of The Bahrain-Japan Business & Friendship Society (BJBFS). MAKI participated in presentation and sampling of their special high quality Gyokuro green and home-green tea cookies.

BJBFS was more than happy to contribute by way of displaying its banners to promote the Japanese Cuisine section.

FAREWELL MESSAGE FROM BOARD MEMBER MR. TAKUYA FURUYA

Dear Mr. Kanoo and all the BJBFS Members,

Having spent over Ten years in the Kingdom of Bahrain and the Gulf region, I've been assigned to head Nomura Korea this time. I'd like to convey my sincere gratitude and appreciation for all your support and hard work, particularly to Mr. Mubarak Kanoo, Mr. Nasser Al Arayedh, and Ms. Nancy Khedouri for their respective roles within the Society. The achievements and success of the Society is highly respected and admired. I'm very proud of being a Member of the Founding Committee and the experiences that I've shared with you.

I still clearly remember the day when H.E. Ambassador Takeshi Kondo phoned me and invited Nomura to establish the Society. HIs aspiration and foresight has proved to be right with the Society's exellent track record. I had little idea how the Society would evolve into what we ee now, which I must admit was due to my lack of  vision in those days. I'd also like to mention the generous support by the succeeding Ambassadors, H.E. Shigeki Sumi, and H.E. Kiyoshi Asako, to develop the Society. I was highly encouraged by them during my tenure with the Society.

Being a BOARD Member in charge of The Educational Committee, I have so many fond memories of the activities with the BJBFS. Some of them include the BJBF's official visit to Japan and Nomura's association with Japanese Language Education in Bahrain with two donations of Japanese books to The National Library at The Isa Cultural Centre, the first donation in 2011 coincided with the 40th Anniversary of Bilateral and Diplomatic Relations between the Kingdom of Bahrain and Japan. Dr. Saburo Matsui's Special Seminar under the patronage of H.E. Dr. Hassan Fakhro, then the Minister of Industry and Commerce, (currently Advisor to His Majesty for Economic Affairs) and the Gold Japanese Lacquer 'Makie' Exhibition at The Bahrain National Museum. One of the main highlights was my appearance as Guest Speaker last year at the Seminar co-organized by the BJBFS and The Bahrain Economic Society.

Without the BJBF's extensive support and cooperation, I believe that none of these events would have been so successful. My experience to the wonderful support that I received was a collective effort by the Members, which will remain in my memory along with the activities themselves.

Mr. Masanori Ozeki, President ,Nomura Investment Banking (Middle East) B.S.C. (c) is my successor and I'd really appreciate your support towards him. With the BOARD's approval he's pleased to succeed as a Board member and continue to run The Educational Committee.

Taking this opportunity, I'd like to wish The Bahrain-Japan Business and Friendship Society and all the Members continued success with their endeavours.

Sincerely,

Takuya Furuya

THE BAHRAIN-JAPAN FRIENDSHIP GARDEN INAUGURATED BY H.R.H PRINCESS SABEEKA

H.R.H. Princess Sabeeka bint Ebrahim Al Khalifa, Wife of His Majesty and President of The Supreme Council for Women (S.C.W.), inaugurated The Bahrain-Japan Friendship Garden at Al Areen Park, Kingdom of Bahrain on February 18th, 2015.

The idea of this project originated out of the historic visit of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa to Japan during April 2012. Almost immediately, Japanese and Local Companies were assigned to start this ambitious project and capture the beauty and elegance that had been enjoyed by His Majesty when he was toured around the exquisite Japanese Gardens.

The location of the 4,000 sq. mtr. Al- Areen Japanese Garden, was selected in such a way that it benefited Bahraini Citizens and exposed them to the magnificent splendor of the Japanese Culture and History.

Japanese Gardens are fascinating for many reasons. With their alluring combination of art, architecture, science, engineering, history, philosophy and horticulture, they capture the very essence of flawlessness. The Japanese Garden tradition goes back to the period when advanced methods of rice production were first introduced to Japan, around the Third Century.

Entering a Japanese Garden allows one to return to an environment in which people find peace and harmony, away from the rapid pace of modern life. All elements are so precisely balanced that they create a feeling of serenity.

It will also provide the necessary framework for the development and follow-up on projects and joint activities between both sides.

The signing of the Memorandum comes after H.R.H. Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa - Crown Prince, Deputy Supreme Commander, First Deputy Premier and EDB chairman and the accompanying Business Delegation visit to Japan in March last year.

The visit resulted in signing a series of Memorandum of Understandings (MoUs) that aimed to promote economic cooperation and encourage joint investments between the two countries. Many MoUs and Agreements were signed between Ministries, Institutions and Private Sector Companies during that visit, to enhance cooperation in the Education and Training, Oil and Gas, Financial Services, Healthcare, Pharmaceutical, Cosmetics and others Sectors.

H.E. Kamal Ahmed - Minister of Transportation of The Kingdom of Bahrain and EDB Acting Chief Executive expressed that, "We consider this as another step towards enhancing the economic ties and bilateral relations between the two countries. Japan is one of our most important trading and investment partners globally. We realize how important Bahrain is to Japanese businesses across various sectors, as it is the ideal destination located in the heart of the $1.6 trillion GCC market. The Kingdom is a gateway to doing business in the GCC for Japanese and international companies. It has one of the most efficient and skilled local workforce in the region that are able to speak both Arabic and English, in addition to the low cost of doing business it offers to all investors."

JISA Vice-Chairman H.E. Toshio Shimada expressed. "This is an exciting opportunity, and we are looking forward to working closely witht he EDB on future collaborative projects, which will promote business between Japan and Bahrain. The ICT Sector is one that is constantly growing globally, and the GCC market, which is expected to grow even further to reach $2trn by 2020, is an attractive area whereby investors can take advantage of the ICT Sector, and the growing demands of the population. Bahrain in particular, offers interested investors many advantages, and with the support of the EDB, companies will be able to set up in an open and competitive market."

The Japanese Delegation also organized a seminar on the ICT Sector in Japan at The Bahrain Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI) premises. The seminar, which was attended by representatives from the Bahraini and Japanese Business Leaders, was held to give an overview on the ICT Sector, as well as to encourage Japanese companies to invest in The Kingdom of Bahrain. It also gave an insight on the most prominent technological solutions, products and services for Japanese companies in this Sector. The Japanese Delegation also visited Bahrain Telecommunications Company (BATELCO), The e-Government Authority and Bahrain Development Bank (BDB), as part of their business tour in The Kingdom of Bahrain.

SBI PHARMACEUTICALS TO SET UP JOINT VENTURE IN BAHRAIN

BJBFS President - Mr. Mubarak Kanoo and BOARD Members hosted a lunch in honour of SBI Pharmaceuticals

SBI Pharmaceuticals Co., Ltd. is a joint venture company founded by SBI Holdings, Inc. and COSMO OIL Co., Ltd. for the development and manufacturing of products containing 5-ALA which is an abbreviation for 5-Aminolevulinic Acid. 5-ALA is an amino acid found in animals and plants. It is an ingredient for hemoglobin in blood and chlorophyll. It is very important for energy generation in living bodies. 5-ALA is contained in many foods that we eat daily. In particular, red wine and foods such as Brussels sprouts, white radish, tea, and vinegar all are rich in 5-ALA.

The purpose of SBI Pharmaceuticals Co., Ltd. is to provide %-ALA-based products in the fields of medicine cosmetics, and health foods (dietary supplements). Its main business overview is the development and manufacturing of medicines, cosmetics, and health foods (dietary supplements) containing 5-ALA (5-Aminolevulinic Acid).

Historically, 5-ALA has been produced by chemical synthesis methods. The chemical synthesis method is labor intensive and time-consuming resulting in very high production cost. Therefore, the use of 5-ALA has been limited to specialized areas of medicine. However, after many years of research and development, COSMO OIL Co., Ltd. developed a unique and patented process for the mass production of 5-ALA. Cosmo Oil's new low cost method has allowed for the use of 5-ALA in a wide range of applications within the healthcare industry.

5-ALA has growth promoting effects in plants. Many farmers use 5-ALA for cultivation of vegetables, etc. In animals, 5-ALA is involved in production of hemoglobin in blood. Further, studies have revealed that 5-ALA plays a role in the production of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the critical unit of currency responsible for intracellular energy generation. Therefore, 5-ALA has a positive effect in energy generation in animals.

Applied use of 5-ALA is possible in various fields ranging from the field of cosmetics for anti-aging to the field of health food (dietary supplements) for the improvement of anemia, metabolic syndrome, etc. and the field of medicine for intraoperative diagnosis of brain tumors, cancer diagnosis, etc. Recent studies have revealed that 5-ALA is also involved in the removal of free radicals and the improvement of immunity. The potential of 5-ALA is expected to expand.

SBI Pharmaceuticals continues to focus on the role of 5-ALA (5-Aminolevulinic Acid) in living bodies and is conducting research and development of 5-ALA-based products. The teamat SBI Pharmaceuticals has spent many years researching and developing 5-ALA to produce a safe and effective compound that can be used in a wide variety of applications.

SBI Pharmaceuticals is conducting research and development for the purpose of utilizing 5-ALA in the following fields:

Medicine business       : Applied use of 5-ALA for "cancer cell identification" and "cancer diagnosis,"

Cosmetics business   : Development of cosmetics/skin-care products containing "5-ALA" as a moisture component for anti-aging,

Health Food business: 5-ALA-based healthfood (dietary supplements).

In order to expand the potential of 5-ALA, SBI Pharmaceuticals is conducting research and development in our laboratory in KOBE Biomedical Innovation Cluster research laboratories across Japan. the head office of SBI Pharmaceuticals is engaged in planning and development of innovative products based on our research and development activities, product control, and operational management. SBI Pharmaceuticals seeks cooperation with value added partners from various fields to develop new business.

During His Majesty's historic visit to Tokyo, SBI Pharmaceuticals issued its Overseas Regulatory Announcement on April 13th, 2013 about its Agreement with the Government of Bahrain for the Promotion of te 5-ALA Business, aiming to continue to explore the potential of a wide range of 5-ALA's clinical applications, starting with a joint clinical trial with Bahrain Defence Force Royal Medical Services Military Hospital and that  it identifies Bahrain as its drug research and development base in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), and will also look at the option of expanding its business operations into the neighboring countries. The agreement also mentioned that SBI Pharmaceuticals will continue to make utmost efforts in performing research and development of 5-ALA-based drugs with the aim of serving to protect the health of as many people as possible not only to Japan, but also around the world.

SBI Pharmaceuticals officially acquired a permit of opening a representative office on October 9th, 2012. The opening of a Bahrain Representative Office will enhance closer relationship with Bahrain which will be a hub for SBI Pharmaceuticals for the research and development of pharmaceuticals in the Middle East and North Africa region (MENA).

On January 13th The Arabian Gulf University (AGU) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with SBI Corporation to begin conducting clinical studies on diabetic patients in Bahrain after initial studies showed the efficacy of its new product on lowering blood glucose levels in diabetic patients. The medicinal product has been licensed in some global markets, including the Kingdom of Bahrain. The MoU was signed by the AGU's Chancellor Dr. Khalid bin Abdulrahman Al-Ohaly and on behalf of the Japanese firm by Mr. Yoshitako Kitao who was accompanied by the company Vice President Mr. Satovomi Kawata and the company's Vice President for Research and Development affairs Dr. Riyadh Najib Al-Rihani and the company's board of Directors member Mr. Sinji Yamaguchi.

Dr. Al-Ohaly welcomed the research cooperation in the area of medicinal drugs development and modern technologies with the Japanese firm in order to examine the efficiency of the medical compound in  remedying diabetes in order to later move on the phase of production and to put the product for sale in local markets. He emphasized that the Japanese company owns advanced medical drug processing technologies which help patients heal from various endemic diseases in the region including diabetes. Dr. Al-Ohaly stressed the importance of this cooperation mentioning that it will have its positive impact on Bahrain and GCC states in developing scientific research techniques. He also pointed out that this cooperation with one of the largest medical drug manufacturing corporations emanates from the University's research and scientific progress and accomplishments over the past few years and opens new scope for scientific cooperation with giant international companies and this positions the AGU amongst world-class universities.

SBI Corporation's President, Mr. Yoshihika Kitao said that he was delighted to cooperate with the AGU in conducting medical research studies on diabetic patients in Bahrain. The AGU has been very carefully chosen by the Japanese medicinal products manufacturing company in order to supercise the research study. This research study is part of a series of medical research studies currently being conducted in the U.S.A., Europe and Japan in order to examine the product's fitness to diagnose and remedy various diseases.

During his speech, H.E. Dr. Hassan Fakhro is quoted as having mentioned that, “Bahrain will further boost its strong trade and economic ties with Japan. We are determined to enhance our trade and economic relationship with Japan, a relationship which goes back to 1934, with the discovery of oil and the first oil shipment that was sent to Japan. Today Japan is one of Bahrain\'s top trade partners, with a trade volume in excess of $1.2 billion.” H.E. further mentioned that, "It is an honour, and great pleasure to be accompanying His Majesty King Hamad during this important visit to this great country of Japan, a visit which culminates various high-level exchanges that have taken place between the two countries, and is a reflection of the importance with which Bahrain views the development of its relationship with Japan.”

"Japanese companies are active in the Bahrain economy in the financial, trade and manufacturing sectors, and have also been engaged in work in the petrochemicals field, gas, telecommunications and a number of large-scale industrial projects.” "With us are many leading Bahrain businessmen with substantial trade relations with Japan, who are here to do even more business.”

H.E. also added that, "Japan\'s assistance and involvement in developing industrial clusters downstream of our core primary producers, such as aluminium, steel, fibreglass and petrochemicals, would enable small and medium producers of secondary and finished products, and the Bahrain International Investment Park to expand and develop new products, and also would encourage more producers to establish new infrastructure facilities.” “Bahrain is also a major international and regional banking and financial services centre, and whilst Japanese financial institutions are present in the market, there is great opportunity for existing institutions to expand their presence, and for new banks to set up a base in Bahrain, to take advantage of mega projects that are either underway or planned for the future.”

H.E. Dr. Fakhro also mentioned that, "We also look forward to the Japanese expertise in our development of housing needs, social welfare, cultural endeavours and educational and vocational programmes, in particular the possible development of the King Hamad University for Science and Technology with an associated digital library would benefit enormously from Japanese experience.” "We could also benefit from the outstanding Japanese abilities in the field of an export development centre, as the Bahrain government, through the Industry and Commerce Ministry, is now in the process of considering the establishment of an export development centre," H.E. added.

In his speech, H.E. also emphasized that, “The signing of a memorandum of understanding between the two sides will be a platform on which to undertake new joint initiatives, and for Bahrain to gain from Japanese experience, in particular in support of the development of small and medium-sized enterprises through various programmes. The Industry and Commerce Ministry contributes to the strengthening of trade relations between the two nations, being focused on continuous improvement of the industrial, commercial, exhibitions and trade environment, making it easier for Japanese companies to gain access to the potential markets in the region.”
